History of Zeta Zeta Chapter of Psi Upsilon
The UBC chapter of Psi Upsilon began in 1928 as a local fraternity called the Alpha Kappa Alpha Society. Its aims were the development of leadership, academic and athletic abilities. In the 30′s it was decided that affiliation with an international fraternity was to be the next step in AKA’s development. Psi U was chosen because of its similar ideals and outstanding reputation among North American fraternities. In 1935, after 4 years of petitioning, AKA was accepted and given a charter. It was installed on October 19th of that year at the Hotel Vancouver, and named as the Zeta Zeta chapter of Psi Upsilon. Since that date, Zeta Zeta has maintained proud standing within UBC’s greek community. Some of the most prominent men in Vancouver were undergraduate members of Psi U here at UBC.
Zeta Zeta Today
One of our most outstanding achievements as a chapter is the production of seven Rhodes scholars  the most of any chapter of Psi Upsilon, despite our small size and 70 years of existence. Psi U, as an international organization also grants scholarships and awards, usually accepting one or two candidates from every chapter, based on the president’s recommendation. All the brothers at Zeta Zeta recognize the importance of scholastic commitments. Younger members are encouraged to consult senior brothers who are engaged in similar disciplines, and are never required to do anything which conflicts with their curriculum.
Like academics, athletics are as strongly promoted at Zeta Zeta today as they were sixty years ago. We traditionally participate in several UBC sporting events through the year, as well as the UBC intramural sport leagues. Currently, besides participating in The Legacy Games’ Grand Slam, we also have a ball hockey team, a co-ed and mens elite volleyball team, a soccer team and a dodgeball team
The social calendar of a Psi U at Zeta Zeta is varied and well-balanced. Occasions range from the wild to the formal, and include parties/events thrown by ourselves or other greek societies, pub nights, nights out on the town, and trips to our nearest fellow chapter, Theta Theta at U of W in Seattle. There is by no means any pressure to be a party animal at Psi U, but the spirit of good times is part of our lives, and we try to make sure that there are always good times to be had.

It began in 1833. Seven young men realized their friendship and connection was something special and worth holding onto. Their commitment to each other, their common interests and their shared aspirations grew into what became Psi Upsilon and their bond has been passed down through many generations. Psi Upsilon is celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding! As we look back and honor our past, we are excited about celebrating our future.
Psi Upsilon has always valued a deep connection among brothers, and to honor this tradition, we invite you to share your story with brothers around the world. Upload photos, write down and post your memories. Share your Psi Upsilon stories. 175 years ago, seven young men at Union College shared a vision. Today, Psi Upsilon stands stronger and more united than ever.
